Exciting news, the BBC has just published a press release confirming that Doctor Who is to be taken to the big screen by Harry Potter director David Yates.
Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, has told Variety that he is about to start work on developing a "Doctor Who" film with the BBC.
He told the showbiz magazine that the film would take a fresh approach to the cult sci-fi show.
"We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena," he said.
"Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.
Yates is reported to be working with the head of LA-based BBC Worldwide Productions, Jane Tranter.
With the series’ 48th anniversary coming up next week this is a very welcome birthday present and something that I hope will be ready for 2013/14 when the show reaches the big 50!!

Very Happy

So Chris, another reboot of the character. How do you feel about this. I have to admit the creative team announced so far are top notch and I have every faith in David Yates.

It'll be interesting to see whether they decide upon a reboot in the style of the recent Star Trek movie with an origins story whereby we see how a young 1st Doctor escapes Gallifrey to begin his travels - perhaps also fleshing out his relationship with The Master which can then either dovetail into the established Tv series or continue on a completely new continuity? Or maybe they could use this movie to pick up from the end of the Matt Smith era and introduce the 12th Doctor? Im easy going with either option and would be especially pleased if they decide to use the Daleks too.

I'm uncomfortable with the whole origin story premise, I have to admit. I think the character benefits from the mystery. Would the Doctor be as cool if he's just a bloke who nicked a time machine because something bad happened to him as a young man?
I'd be more interested in seeing a big budget retelling of how he first entwined himself in human affairs. An Unearthly Child worked brilliantly as a first story so why not just retell that on a bigger, more epic scale. Combine it with Dr Who and the Daleks if you must.
