OMG, call me Mr Sceptic but I'll take this news with a pinch of salt until I can see that the film has been made and available to view on DVD. A warning though to you Hawk fans, sequels are usually subject to the law of diminishing returns. Surely if you are purists then you would prefer to have your memories of the original untarnished by an inferior follow-up. $10 million dollar budgets are a drop in the ocean in terms of movie-financing these days and will barely cover the cost of the film-crew's wages and so you will inevitably have a film shot in the Wapsey's Wood gravel-pit with TV-equivalent sfx and silly-string again - lol Very Happy

Silence you Dog!!

WHEN the film IS made and available to view I will make sure you watch all of it (right through to the end credits and the teaser bit at the end for the third film). Twisted Evil

Given that the original was filmed on just such shoe-string budget and still managed to become the GREATEST fantasy film of all time I am not concerned. Smile I take your point that it is going to be a pretty big reach to match the phenominal awesomeness of the original (and glad that you are coming around to recognising that fact) but the the simple notion that they are even considering making a sequel has kept me smiling all day.

So anyway howz the taste of them sour grapes Krull Boy Laughing

AoP

PS: Can't help thinking that winning that Krull vs HTS Formula D games had no small part in the decision to make a sequel. I suspect Renny's Savage Hawk the Slayer conversion also contributed to the decision.

PPS: Holy Cow! We might even get a HTS boxed set. Or even an extra special edition of HTS with directory and cast commentry.

I think Gort best sums up my feelings regarding that proposition when he said: "I'd sooner eat cowdung!" Smile

Seriously though, would it not be better if (instead of making a sequel) that they instead just remade (or re-imagined) a better quality version of the original-Hawk film, and used that as a launch point for a series of sequels? Im using Galactica as a good example here, where the fans clamoured (initially) for a continuation of the original franchise, but were rewarded instead with a far superior re-imagining of their series which returned to the beginning of the story, recast all the roles, (in some cases the genders too), and took the saga in a completely different direction. The danger with a sequel to a little known movie is that you can risk alienating the majority of viewers who have never seen (or wish to see) the original film which isnt exactly a good financial starting-point. Unless of course they are intending for this sequel to be released straight to DVD of course in which case they can afford to focus primarily on the existing fanbase (all of whom I think are members of this forum too - Very Happy ).

I think that's a good discussion point for you Hawk fans, so lets here back as to what you would like/prefer this sequel to deliver?

Hawk The Sequel....?????? Empty Re: Hawk The Sequel....??????

Post by Renny 20th March 2009, 10:05

I have no idea whether this sequel will actually happen although I related the facts as I found them and as far as I know they are accurate. Let's be honest, the intention of the film-makers here is not to launch a world dominating franchise. It's an attempt to harness the affection in which the original is held, for all it's faults, and make a direct to video quickie which will shift a few units. I have no idea whether it will succeed although, as you point out, i'm sure a few of us on these forums will let their curiosity get the better of them should it ever appear.

The original Hawk The Slayer had loftier ambitions as is evident to anyone whose watched the Clapperboard interviews on the DVD. The film makers attempted to make the best film they could within the ridiculous restrictions of the British film industry at the time. Of course, it was an attempt to some degree to cash in on the success of Star Wars. As was your beloved Krull, albeit it in a more direct and obvious fashion, proving that shiny stuff and lots of American money does not necessarily mean you get a better movie than a low budget, British effort. It was eerily prescient of them to anticipate the trend towards fantasy movies which would follow some years later, but obviously they were somewhat ahead of the curve. They must have done something right, though, given the affection with which I, and some of my good friends here, remember it.

As far as your notion of re-imagining it, I can't agree. I love Battlestar Galactica and believe even Richard Hatch would agree that the choice to start from scratch was probably the right one. Especially as it's provided him with gainful employment for a few years. Does that necessarily mean that the new "Galactica" is inherently superior to the first because it is more grown up and serious? Not necessarily. I have a lot of affection for the original series and remember following it avidly as a child. There is room for both, and ironically it is rumoured that even now a movie version is being prepared overseen by original series producer Glen Larson, essentially ignoring the reboot. And i'm sure this is a theme which will surface again when JJ Abrams "Star Trek" arrives in 50 days or so (not that i'm counting).
And to turn your question back at you, would it not have been better for a certain Russell T Davies to make a re-imagined, better quality version of "An Unearthly Child" and used that as a launch point for a new series? The answer to that is clearly no, as what Davies rightly did was build on the affection and loyalty of the original audience and simply made a better, up to date, continuation of the original series, playing to the series' strengths and playing down the inherent naffness of some of the original Dr Who. An approach which would, I submit, work equally well for "Hawk The Hunter", should it ever appear on our DVD shelves.

I think you secretly love the film, but don't wish to admit it. Come my brother, join with my us, you will be able to watch it with friends, rather than sitting in the dark with the sound turned down, fearful of discovery. What do you say? Or has the quaking in your belly stilled your tongue? Twisted Evil

I quoted that line from Gort ("I'd sooner eat cowdung") with the expectation that you could then respond with the appropriate retort from "the solider" which I think goes like this: "That can be arranged, and you can wash it down in your own blood if need be" Laughing Perhaps you arent as familiar with the dialogue as you like to pretend to be!!
