Should the Tau Commander have fought to the bitter end or run away (like Brave Brave Sir Robin)
Tau Tastes Like Chicken (or is it the other way around?)
As dawn broke on the 2nd battle between the Tau and the forces of the Great Devourer the Tyrnaid forces managed to steal the initiative and sweep across the board in leaps and bounds.
1st to die was the Hammerhead, parked in the centre of the battefield, though it's self defence systems took down a Tyranid Warrior it was ripped to pieces in a very short time. The Tau Fire Warriors cowering in a building opened fire and destroyed a whole unit of Termagants, after taking a few hits themselves, only to see them replaced immediately from the edge of the board.
More fire swept the 2 surviving Tyrnaid Warriors and one of them fell but the survivor steadfastly stalked after the Tau Commander (anything that well armoured has got to be tasty inside) who was trying, and failing, to take out the Hive Tyrant. All the mean while a unit of Spinegants slaughtered more Fire Warriors and cleared one quarter of the board.
More fire from another unit of Termagants killed 3 and then drove off the remaining Fire Warriors whilst the Tau Commander proved to be too tough a morsel for a lone Tyranid Warrior to crack.
Seeing that he was on his own the Commander chose to withdraw rather than let the news of how frighteningly effective the Tyranids were in combat be lost. It is all for the Great Good you understand, no personal salvation was ever thought about.........
All in all a tasty snack at very little cost to the Hive Mind, on to afters soon then.

Re: Tau Tastes Like Chicken (or is it the other way around?)
The first battle took place 24 hrs earlier and saw the Tau patrol sweep into some abandoned ruins and encounter the first wave of Tyranids. 3 broods of Genestealers.
As they swept across the ground between them on turn 1 their numbers were decimated by the Tau`s firepower.
1 brood was obliterated by pulse riffle fire, another lost half of it`s creatures as they were torn to peaces
by flachets from the hammerheads sub munition rounds. and the last took casualties.
On turn 2 the survivors tore into one of the fire warrior teams leaving little behind save pieces of tau meat strewn over the battle field. However this left them vulnerable to fire from the hammerhead witch obliged by reducing there numbers still further, the survivors(2) then turned and assaulted the hammerhead.
Meanwhile the other remaining unit witch consisted of 3 stealer's and a brood lord assaulted the commanders battle suit and though the commander vanquished 3 of there number before he was finished of by the brood lord who went onto obliterate the other fire warrior team in a spray of blood and guts.
After joining the other stealers in their first assault on the hammerhead witch did not go well for the tyranids and the result was that it was just the brood lord and the tank, and with Tyranid efficiency in the second assault the Brood lord tore the tank to pieces.
The entire Tau force had been obliterated and of the Tyranids only the brood lord remained.
A draw.

About 90 mins each, no longer than that,
however niether game wenyt beyond 3 turns, and they were pretty violent from the start,if you skirt around before going into combat it may take longer.

Did you roll for setup/objectives, or just 'go at it'?

gone in 90 Mins
The 90 mins included setup time, rules checks, changes of underwear after being shot/stabbed/bludgeoned/bit and after game analysis.
If you allocate 2 hours for set up and knock down of the scenery after then it should be ok.
a 4 x 4 table for 500 and 750 point battles is fine, by 1000 points we will need 6 x 4 tables though.

Re: Tau Tastes Like Chicken (or is it the other way around?)
There were victory conditions, I.E capture and hold a point on the table at the end of the game. however it ended up that the best way to acchive this was to wipe out the opponent. In the first game all the tau units were wiped out, However Simons only surviving unit,(a broodlord) was not capable of holding ground and thus it was a draw.
The second game all the Tau units were wiped out(even quicker this time) and being the sole army on the board Simon one.mutter mutter mutter........
