With the announcement of Starwars going all 3D, i see a fat bearded yank finally destroying any affection i have left for the film i saw back in ‘77. But that fat greedy Yank had to mess with it again and again.

My love of the film was unshakable for years then it was crushed by Peter Jackson, it fell from my all-time number 1 to my all-time number 2. Peter and JRR understand what the word Trilogy means, LOTR beats Starwars hands down

So with the announcement of 3D Starwars it falls from my list of top 10 films, sadly forever. its too tainted and the original has been corrupted and soiled. i feel that same way about songs by Michael Jackson and Gary Glitter. They are just a bit grubby know, no Gary i don’t want to be in your gang.

But all of that is just my opinion, and it is only a bleeding film

Funny you should say that, I was only partially aware of 'Star Wars 3D' but I'm really not interested in the slightest. It is not that I even mind it being done, I simply don't really care about Star Wars anymore. Having watched eps 1 to 3 recently they are all universally shit. Terribly acted, terribly written and painful to watch in places. I really can't see myself ever wanting to watch those films again for many many years.

As for the three original films, if only Lucas had given their fans (i.e. the people that have given him a shit-ton of cash over the years) what they wanted; the films as they were originally released, but cleaned up and remastered. That's all he had to do and everything would be right - he could mess around with them as much as he liked as long as I could have had the choice of watching a nice clean print of the original films if I wanted to. But he had to be a dick about the whole thing. That was the point that I stopped caring about Star Wars.

Ah well, there is still Hawk the Slayer Smile

I can but only agree with Russ, a nice clean print and upgraded sound is all I want.

Take me back to the 1977 original opening sequence of the star destroyer chasing Princess Leia's ship and the sound that blew you away!

Happy Days!

I agree with the above,
These films do not need to be retro fitted with 3d, They do not need it, they were not made for it and so will not benifit from the process. It will be like
retrofitting Casablanca for 3d, you could do it, but why would you want too? The only benifitt to come out of it will be to line No-necks wallet.
My fear is that bearing in mind that when eps 4,5,6,come out a New hope will be nearly 40 years old(yikess..) and he will decide that the effects are just not up to it.and so he will use the 3d make over as an excuse to redo the effect in those movies with shiny new cgi.
No-neck gave me and meny others something wonderfull during my childhood, and now he is going to rob me of it.

I pretty much agree with all of the above sentiments. Mr Lucas has made it clear that he doesn't feel that we, the movie going public who have lined his pockets, have the right to disagree with his sentiment that the films we saw at the cinema in the 70's and 80's were not finished, not his vision. Whatever.
Unfortunately, he is the ultimate one hit wonder. Star Wars at the flicks when I was 10 was pretty much the greatest event in my life up to that point. It pretty much nudged me into gaming ("yeah, you can do Star Wars with Traveller...") and movies and all of this other stuff. And i'm sure that's the same story for millions of kids around the world. But he knows he can't do it again. Peter Jackson, i'm sure has great movies left in him. James Cameron, maybe. Christopher Nolan, undoubtably. But George, he's not even tried that hard, least of all with the prequels. So he does what he can do with his creative autonomy, bought with our box office receipts, and that is keep messing around with these movies. Like Russ said, if he'd just release the original version of the first trilogy in pristeen condition, I'd happily let him go and muck about to his hearts content, but he couldn't even do that. The joke is of course that even now, the 3D fad is on the way out. Clash Of The Titans et al have proved that any idiot with the cash can turn a mediocre movie into 3D and hope to have the cash roll in, but this is happening less and less now. By the time Star Wars comes out in 3D in 2015 (!!) there will be some other technological treat designed to wring our cash out of us. And George will clap his pudgy little hands and dust off the movies again. As always, I will vote with my wallet and I will not stand in line to have Mr Lucas laugh at me again.
And as my dear friend and arbiter of good taste has said, there is, and will always be, Hawk The Slayer.

Even I would pay good money to see Hawk the Slayer in 3D!

But what about Krull in 3D, that would be awesome!

I can see it now, as the blade comes screeching out of the screen towards you! Duck!!! Very Happy

Wouldn't converting Krull into 3D would just provoke accusations of 'gilding the lily' because you cant really improve on a film that is already perfect! Very Happy

For my two-cense worth I think George Lucas should take note of the recent re-release of 'Back to the Future' which is now in cinemas this week to celebrate its 25th Anniversary - with a digitally cleaned-up print and sound. I went along to see it on Friday night (which I was very pleased to see in a packed-out 'Screen 4') and had a fantastic time re-watching one of my top-10 favourite movies with a hyped-up and very appreciative crowd!!! Everyone had a great time and I came away thinking to myself that this was how to treat a classic movie – just provide your audience with a nicely cleaned-up print, without all these unnecessary gimmicks that we keep hearing about such as the retro-fitted 3D, new scenes and updated CGI effects.
