Doctor Who - Series 32/33 (or should that be Series 6/7?) Empty Doctor Who - Series 32/33 (or should that be Series 6/7?)

Post by rogartheranger 30th August 2010, 02:08

As you will probably be aware our next slice of Doctor Who will be the 2010 Christmas Special (guest-starring Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins), with the next full run of 13 episodes scheduled for transmission in 2011. (Whilst long-term Doctor Who fans such as myself will probably look to this as being 'Series 32', I believe the BBC refer to it as 'Series 6').

However in a surprise annoucement today at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Steven Moffat has announced that the next series of Doctor Who will now be split in two with a 'gamechanging' cliffhanger in episode 7.

“Doctor Who will come back for 7 episodes at Easter, and build to an Earth shattering climax at episode 7. There will be a huge cliffhanger, a cliffhanger that we could never do normally at the end of a series of Doctor Who because it would be too long til it came back. An enormous, honestly, game-changing cliff-hanger for the Doctor and Amy and Rory. ..it will change everything for them. And in order to give you time to recover, we’ll let you go off and have your summer holidays and then come back in the Autumn for another 6 episodes for what will be in fact ‘Series 7’ I suppose."

"The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

The BBC press office describe the split transmission as the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. "By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens."

The Guardian, who host the annual television festival, have uploaded a video clip of Moffat making the announcement here:- http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/video/2010/aug/29/doctor-who-cliffhanger-video .

Let the speculation begin now........ Very Happy

(UPDATED 31/08/10) On a separate note that may be of interest to some of you, the BBC will be broadcasting the 2010 Doctor Who Prom on the evening of Monday 6th September on BBC Three. This broadcast will be a 1-hour edit of the Prom which excludes all the non-Doctor Who classical pieces which were peppered throughout the concert. However, if you would like to see the Prom in its entirety then you'll be pleased to hear that the BBC are planning to screen the full version via their Red Button Service on 6th September, and will also be screening the extended version of the concert on 10th September too (via BBC Three again). Yay!!!

Broadcast times:
Monday 6th September - BBC Three - 20:30 to 21:30 (this is a 1-hour edit which omits all the non-Doctor Who classical pieces)
Friday 10th September - BBC Three - 19:00 to 20:30 (this is the 90min version which should feature the full concert)

Cant say i like this idea but that is just my opinion and their is not a lot that we can do about it, I can see why Moffet and the BBC want to do it spreading the season out over the year. As said above it means that you can have 2 cliffhangers in a season(don`t we already get 2 cliffhangers....1 at the midway point and episode 12 usualy). But i like the format that the show is in at the moment as you can have 13 weeks (baring wourld cups)of stories that slowley build until the season finale.
I know that before the revamp cliffhangers wear a trademark of the show, but has the show suffered from not haveing them on a regular basis, i would say no.

just some random rantings.......

We usually get three 2-part stories and seven 1-part adventure episodes each year, and so that gives us 3 end-of-episode cliffhangers to enjoy during the season. There's no reason why this format should change next year if we assume that the first two-parter is scheduled around episodes 3 and 4 (or 4 and 5), and then the 2nd two-parter (with the big game-changing cliffhanger) used to bridge the mid-season gap between Episodes 7 and Episode 8. The season can then conclude later in the year with the usual two part finale for episodes 12 and 13?

Im open minded about the format change, as we’re still getting 13 episodes, and I like the idea that there will be no more then a few months wait between watching batches of episodes throughout the year. This is also a rare opportunity for Doctor Who to provide us with a proper end-of-series cliffhanger (at the end of Episode 7) which we’ve never had before; – a huge cliffhanger where we will have to wait for more then 1 week to see the resolution to, and also something that will get everyone talking over Summer as we debate how the hell the Doctor will manage to get himself out of this latest situation and how this will impact on the future of the show....(e.g. what if he loses his regenerations, the TARDIS is destroyed, or the Doctor turns evil, or River is revealed as another version of the Doctor etc etc) .

And on a more mischievous note, I was just thinking that we've now got a bit of payback for the US with our very own 'mid-season hiatus' (Twisted Evil) just like they keep doing to us all the time with series like Lost and Galactica...he he he.
