Random Thoughts...?

So, a couple of things have occurred to me recently. Firstly, is this forum still serving a purpose? Traffic seems to have slowed to a trickle recently. Not surprising given the lack of gaming going on at the moment. Still, is this likely to change? No immediate plan to shut the thing down but it would be a shame to see the forum just sit here unused. If you lot still find it useful or even if you don't, sound off and let me know.

Secondly, i've been wondering whether there might be interest in a second, tri-weekly game like Digger's. That is, meet up every three weeks or so, obviously during a different week to D's to keep things simple. I've been thinking maybe something like Traveller. Roll up a subsector and go. Make use of patrons books and improv to keep things moving but aim for the long haul, rather than the three sessions and out model. Not sure myself yet but been thinking about it. Not even sure if I want to run it but thought I would float the idea.

Lastly, I may try and run a short pulp game before the end of the year. I hate to mention the Justice Associates but I had a thought about maybe doing something with the JA in WW2. As the game would be short, and might possibly become an annual event like Kevin's Harry Potter game, we could even do new characters or use some of the JA and some new. Feedback requested, please. Are you bored with the JA? Then tell me.

Although regular RPG’ing may be a bit sparse at the moment, I am still regularly participating in board-gaming sessions every Wednesday and Thursday, for which my good friends and I have been regularly contributing to the forum to brag over our recent victories (or bemoan our bad luck), and also to post stats on our progress through the recent Memoir 44 campaign. And so from my perspective this forum is still serving a useful purpose and I would be very disappointed if it was removed.

Onto your second point, I would certainly be interested in participating within another tri-weekly gaming group (on a separate week to Digger’s AD&D) – although have to admit to being less enthused over a long-term Traveller campaign. Personally (if a sci-fi setting is on the cards), I would much rather play something like Star Wars or Star Trek as I find these easier to visualise and immerse myself within, compared to Traveller which is less engaging as it never really seems to spring to life from the page.

On a more positive note however, I would love to play some more Justice Associates later this year especially if it involves a World War 2 setting as this will surely increase the personal stakes and provide us all with plenty more Ratzi’s to fight – (how can anyone not love that idea?)!!!

Lastly, (and remember you heard it here first), I am currently gearing up to run my first Doctor Who Adventures in Time and Space RPG tomorrow with my cousins (who have come down to stay for the weekend). Once I’ve ironed out all the kinks, I will get ready to launch a full game for anyone who’s interested in the next few weeks.

For my part i will play or run anything, i have been lackadaisical about restarting after My holiday. i have had a few hiccups.

I love the idea of a Annual JA game. that would be cool. and whilst i do like Diggers game it is very frustrating playing once every 3 weeks (12 sessions a year !). i would prefer weekly game, part of me would love a long running campaign over the 3 week game. but the 3 week format mean lots more systems and settings, which is fun. i guess i am just a RPG whore

The forum seems to go through moments of high activity and moments of low activity. so some times it is cool and some time it looks dead, but thats cool the fact we have it and it works when we need it to.

DR WHO............................................we will keep you to that..

So to the next question next Thursday who's up for rolling dice round my pad?

One thing about a 3 week schedule; it really has to be hardcore gaming. One of the reasons that D's campaign worked in that format was because there's no pissing around. The game started at 7.30 and continued until 10.30-11. So you really feel like you are getting somewhere - and if everyone is into it then you can actually get a lot accomplished in 3+ hours.

I don't think the 3W format would work without that gung-ho, "let's game!" attitude. 90 to 120 minutes of gaming every 3 weeks wouldn't be enough time to get anything done IMHO.

Traveller was simply an example, and I share some of your concerns over "getting" the background. However, just to be clear, I was simply proposing something along the lines of Digger's ADD&D campaign. Generate a random subsector, pick a starting world and go. The direction of the game would hopefully be fairly fluid and certainly not tied into the traveller mythology too closely. However, could be another game. Say Dr Who or something . I'd love to run Star Traek but I doubt if anyone else would play it.

Yes, I will only consider getting into another game of this sort if there is a genuine desire to play the game. On my part and that of the others playing as well. Not to say there will be no mucking about but underlying it is a wish to get some gaming done.

So given that the weekly game has stopped, the last option seems to be a game every 3 weeks!!!. before a campaign is written and PC created. should we have a 3 part vote.?

Then maybe we can get a game that everyone wants to play.

also if it does go to a 3 week campaign then will we just have one or would we run a couple of campaigns in parallel on alternate weeks?

or do we all drive up to Redhill / Horsham and play weekly.

Weekly gaming hasn't stopped (exactly) but myself and Chris are getting some games out of our system that are only of interest to ourselves (unfortunately) on Thursdays and I'm guessing that this will continue for the near future. However, given that there are only 3 active RPGers in the group at the moment (you, me and Chris) even if we did get together it wouldn't be much of a game session, hence these the current gaming alternatives.

I would also point out that there is a gaming club that meets weekly at Tilgate. They play miniatures (mainly Warmachine and GW) but also do boardgames, MTG and I some RPGs. If you really want to run some games, it might be worth your while checking it out. I haven't as yet - even though I know a couple of people that go there regularly - as it is on Wednesday and that clashes with boardgaming, however if you fancy checking it out I'm sure we could arrange a look-see. It seems to me that if people are prepared to travel and pay good money to game, they are probably going to be a lot more committed to playing said games.

However there is always the alternative of running a forum game...

Thanks but i'll take the zero, having played in pubs and scout huts in the past they are a little too impersonal and noisy for my old body.

I will wait till other people are ready to game again. i will also post a list of long campaigns i have been working on if anyone is interested in a longer campaign. which could be run every three weeks.

Well that is one suggestion, and I suppose if you're playing in both Digger's game and this one then you'd be roleplaying two out of three weeks.

I don't think this necessarily follows. Sure they're paying for the privilege of gaming, presumably because they don't have access to gamers where they are, or perhaps because they go to this club to play specific games i.e. in this case MTG or whatever. Does this mean they're more committed to playing the game well than those of us who play in Digger's game or you boardgamers? I don't think so. That said, I haven't been to the MTG club and so I have no idea what the people are like who attend it. They may all be excellent gamers and it would be unfair of me to assume otherwise. If some of you guys go along, I hope you report back on your experience and let us know. Seems to me the downside of this arrangement is that you have to work a lot harder to "sell" your game to these people because they have presumably never met you before and are unlikely to want to use their paid gaming time to play in your game if you don't grab them in the first session.

Just to confirm that after a bit of brainstorming i've got a lock on a story for the game. I will probably stick with Savage Worlds to avoid having to radically change the characters again. I'm thinking this game will take part in 1939 and am open to replacing some or all of the characters with new ones. More details to come but i'm thinking I will run this in October/November when the nights have drawn in nicely.

Forgot to respond to this. This might be something to consider as an aside to all of the above. I've been playing in a Star Trek forum RPG since last November and have been enjoying it. Not the same as sitting around with your friends but can be a good experience in itself.
