I give up...

Post by Renny on 6th August 2009, 08:31

I've decided that I will no longer try to bolster up the Thursday night group in the absence of the prolific Mr Rolfe. I'm continuing with Digger's Wednesday group and will arrange games on a more spontaneous basis but i'm tired of trying to drum up interest. I'm not pointing fingers or blaming anyone and I am by no means giving up on gaming. I just want to do things more on my terms in future. Haven't quite decided what this means yet and I don't want to rant. I just have too much else going on to waste time. I think I will concentrate on writing games and then finding people who want to play them. Good luck to all and see you around the table.

It's a deal. Hope you and the family have a wonderful holiday and look forward to hooking up when you get back. Big props again for the game last week, btw. Excellent stuff!

Gonna spend some of the 3 weeks revising my manuscript and polishing some Victorian adventure, the JA thing and...HARRY POTTER year 3. "the council of Merlin".

I will be using my newly found free time to write up my Space 1889 adventure and do some work on my Star Trek crewlist. See you soon.

Ohhh, ranty Wink

But I agree. There seems to be this attitude prevailing at the moment that the GM is some sort of television that you just turn up, switch on, be distracted for a few hours and then switch off. That somehow it doesn't require any effort on the players part. I personally believe that it is the GM's job to entertain the players. But by the same measure it is the players job to entertain the GM. And this is the more important aspect of the relationship, because if the GM isn't having fun there is no game. Period.

Prepping and running a game requires a lot of effort and it is a pretty thankless task most of the time. All the player has to do is create one reasonably well rounded and developed character and show a bit of enthusiasm for the story being told and the GMs efforts. Most of the time you get a set of stats and a name (and sometimes even the name is shit). No depth, no consistancy just a cipher with various probabilities of succeeding at certain dice rolls. If the people that you are doing all this work for don't seem that interested why bother?

So in short. Don't just turn up to watch TV. This is not a passive hobby, it requires creativity and effort. If that doesn't appeal there are tons of computer games and MMORPGs out there that require nothing but switching on a computer and tapping a few keys. More enthusiasm means more games, more fun and the belegured GMs actually feeling that all that work has been worthwhile - because when a game really comes together (players and GMs) it fucking rocks!

Nuff said.

Perhaps. I've obviously scared everyone away due to the lack of comments.... Rolling Eyes

well it seems like such a shame that the gaming seems to fizzled out..

what i would like to say is that
:if you have any scenario/campaign that you may be thinking of running please drop me a line and hopefully ill be free

:Also i have had a few strange ideas pottering around in my head so perhaps i may even be calling on the great and the few to participate in a game that i'll run.

lets hope that gaming in one form or another will continue
