Ray Harryhausen Collection Boxed Set review

Post by agentofping on 31st July 2009, 23:45

The Ray Harryhausen Collection is a boxed set consisting of 'It came from Beneath the Sea', '20 Million Miles to Earth' and (my favourite) 'Earth vs The Flying Saucers'. I'm not going to review the films as I'm pretty sure everyone has seen them already and will instead focus on the actual DVD releases.

The films in this collection were made after The Beast from 20'000 Fathoms and before the Sinbad films. Originally filmed in black and white, what marks this release is that all the films have been colourised. The colourisation process was done with Harryhausen's approval and supervision.

Being a bit of a purist, I've never been a big fan of film colourisation, but I have to say the colour versions of all these films are truly excellent and (with only a couple of minor exceptions) I can find no fault with the results. In fact they are so good that within a few minutes of watching them you completely forget that they were originally filmed in black and white.

The films have also been restored and the prints are great. Best of all they also include the original black and white versions as well, so the choice is yours (are you listening George). As well as being able to select colour or black and white from the main menu, you can actually flip between them as the films are playing by using the angle button on you DVD remote which is a nice feature.

Each of the films is a double dvd set. The films including commentaries from Harryhausen and industry luminaries such as Denis Murren and other SFX gurus and the bonus discs is packed with extras; including features on the making of the films, Harryhausen talking with Tim Burton, interviews, galleries and more.

All in all this is a great collection and its nice to see Harryhausen's films getting the treatment they deserve. Highly recommended.

I managed to find time to watch all of the dvds this week and I have to say, wait for it, colour me impressed! The treatment on these films is nothing short of remarkable, and if I did not know better, i would swear that these were filmed in colour originally. All three have been handled with real respect and the quality of the print on these is freaking awesome. I also enjoyed rewatching them and all are good fun, although my favourite is still It Came From Beneath The Sea. All in all a great package which I will be picking up as soon as possible.
